Agartala, October 2: Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Minister Santana Chakma, BJP state president and MLA Abhishek Debroy, West Tripura District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar and several others on Friday paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his birth anniversary at his statue at Circuit House here.
Speaking to reporters after the programme, Debroy said Gandhi’s message of non-violence, peace, tolerance and love remained relevant in contemporary society and should not be confined to Gandhi Jayanti celebrations.
“Hatred does not construct any society or country. Only love, tolerance and non-violence can build a country, a society and even a family,” Debroy said.
He said Gandhi demonstrated that conflicts could be addressed through peace and tolerance rather than confrontation, and urged people to follow the Mahatma’s principles in their daily lives.
“On the eve of October 2, we celebrate Gandhi Jayanti, but for the rest of the year we do not think, live or practise his thoughts and way of life. It will not produce any meaningful result,” Debroy said.
He called for making Gandhi’s message a part of everyday life, particularly his emphasis on non-violence and simple living.
October 2 is observed in India as Gandhi Jayanti and internationally as the International Day of Non-Violence. The United Nations General Assembly established the international observance in 2007, recognising the universal relevance of non-violence and the promotion of a culture of peace, tolerance and understanding. The UN describes Gandhi as a pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence whose ideas have inspired movements for civil rights and social change across the world.
The tributes in Agartala were part of observances across the country marking the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation.
