Agartala, October 2: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Friday said Tripura University has an important role to play in the comprehensive development of the state and called for strengthening the institution as a centre of knowledge, research, innovation, skill development and entrepreneurship.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 14th Foundation Day celebrations of Tripura University, attended by Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman, the Chief Minister said the state government was working to strengthen higher education infrastructure and create more opportunities for students within Tripura.
Saha said the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020 has been implemented in colleges and universities in the state from the 2023-24 academic session, with emphasis on skill development, inclusion and introduction of new courses.
He said several new academic and infrastructure projects were also being taken up under the 2026-27 plans, including academic and administrative buildings, library facilities and other infrastructure aimed at strengthening higher education institutions.
Referring to Tripura University, a central university, Saha said the institution had the potential to provide students with opportunities for advanced learning, research and skill development without having to go outside the state.
“Students should get the opportunity here itself. Tripura University is a central university and has many capabilities. We want to fulfil whatever gaps remain,” Saha told reporters.
He said the Foundation Day programme brought together vice-chancellors and representatives of universities and other institutions, providing an opportunity for exchange of knowledge and institutional experience.
The Chief Minister also said interaction with industrialists could help expand research and entrepreneurship opportunities at the university. He said an announcement of Rs 10 crore had been made for research work and entrepreneurship-related activities.
In his address to students, Saha stressed the importance of skills and character, saying education should not be confined to building a successful career but should also help young people become responsible citizens.
He urged students to work hard, accept change and maintain integrity, while pursuing their aspirations with determination and purpose.
Saha said Tripura University should continue to strengthen national and international collaborations, interdisciplinary research and partnerships and develop as a leading centre of knowledge and innovation.
He also congratulated the university’s alumni, students, Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, faculty members and others associated with its development on its 14th Foundation Day.
