Agartala, September 21:** East Agartala Police Station has arrested two youths and seized 18 kilograms of cannabis during a night patrol near the College Tilla Lake embankment, police said.
The recovery was made late Saturday night after a police patrol team spotted the two youths and became suspicious of their activities. The personnel intercepted them and conducted a search, leading to the detection of the cannabis.
Following the seizure, both youths were arrested and taken to East Agartala Police Station. The recovered substance was also seized as part of the investigation.
Officer-in-Charge Krishnadhan Sarkar confirmed the arrests and said the action followed routine police surveillance in the area. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of law.
Investigators are now working to establish where the cannabis had originated and its intended destination. Police are also examining the possible involvement of additional persons in the transportation of the consignment.
The investigation will include efforts to trace the route allegedly used to move the cannabis and determine whether the arrested youths have links with a larger narcotics distribution network.
Police have stepped up patrolling and surveillance in Agartala and adjoining areas as part of measures to check the transportation and distribution of illegal drugs. Officers are also maintaining vigilance in locations identified as vulnerable to narcotics-related activities.
Officials said further arrests or legal action could follow if the ongoing investigation establishes the involvement of other individuals.
The latest seizure has added to police efforts to disrupt the movement of cannabis and other narcotic substances in and around the capital. The investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the seized consignment.
