**Agartala, September 21:** Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has received approval to increase its MBBS intake by 100 seats, taking the total number of seats from 150 to 250 from the 2026-27 academic session.
The decision is expected to expand medical education opportunities for students in Tripura and across the Northeast and further enhance the state’s medical education infrastructure.
Welcoming the development, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for facilitating the expansion at AGMC.
Saha, in a social media post, said the additional seats would create more opportunities for students from Tripura and help strengthen both medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the state.
AGMC has so far offered 150 MBBS seats each academic year. The addition of 100 seats will enable the college to admit 250 students annually, providing increased opportunities for those seeking to pursue medical education.
The revised intake also places AGMC among a number of prominent medical institutions in India with an annual capacity of 250 MBBS students. These include Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi; B.J. Medical College, Gujarat; Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute; SMS Medical College, Jaipur; Madras Medical College, Chennai; and King George’s Medical University, Lucknow.
The expansion comes against the backdrop of efforts to increase the availability of medical education and strengthen healthcare infrastructure across the country. The higher intake at AGMC is expected to provide a further boost to medical education opportunities in Tripura and support the state’s healthcare development.
