World Meterological Day was observed by the Indian Meterological Department in its Agartala headquarters in an unique manner by allowing school students to not only visit its highly secured center next the MBB airport but also allowed to interact and take handoff training at the weather observatory on various sophisticated equipment including Doppler radar beside learn weather forecasts, satellite maps, various meteorological services and there uses.
NP Kulkarni, scientist at IMD, Agartala said that such exposure visit not only helps the children towards learning and understanding through practical dealing with what they learned in the classroom like the observatory radars or the various equipment used for weather monitoring and forecasting but also help them to choose metrology as their career option.
In addition to capacity development they can learn how to study and utilise weather data and early warning with the common public and help in understanding and managing climate change issues which is a global challenge and needs to keep abreast the future generation regarding the current concepts, theories and tools developed on climate-related issues.
Students for whom this was the first scope to enter the center said that the visit was very helpful and knowledge as they got opportunity to not only interact with the professionals but also gained hands-on experience in the field of meteorology.
They were also delivered knowledge regarding various activities of the department including dissemination of weather information, alerts, and multilateral international cooperation involvement in daily working activities in weather, climate and water-related issues in regard to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
World Meteorological Day honours the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950. The group was started on March 23, 1950, with the goal of dealing with all national and international problems related to climate and weather change.
The theme for World Meteorological Day 2023 is “The Future of Weather, Climate, and Water Across Generations”.
