Agartala, January 2:
Former Rajya Sabha member and senior BJP leader Tarun Vijay on Friday visited the ancestral home of deceased student Angel Chakma at Machmara in Tripura’s Unakoti district and strongly demanded a high-level investigation into the case, along with capital punishment for those responsible for the killing.
Arriving from Dehradun, Vijay expressed deep anguish over the incident, stating that the journey to Machmara was emotionally painful and felt like losing a member of his own family. Calling the incident an “unpardonable crime,” he said, “We are all blood brothers—one India, one nation,” while speaking to reporters.
Sharing the grief of Angel Chakma’s parents, the former BJP MP said no one can truly understand the pain of losing a child except the parents themselves. “I have come here to stand with the family in their sorrow. I don’t have words to express this loss,” he said.
Vijay raised serious concerns over the manner in which the investigation is being conducted and expressed dissatisfaction with the steps taken by the Uttarakhand government so far. He asserted that the case should have been handed over to a higher-level independent authority. He also alleged that the role of the owner of the rented house where Angel stayed was completely ignored.
According to reports, Angel had a heated exchange with the house owner on December 8, a day before he was stabbed. It was alleged that the owner forced him to vacate the house the same night and that Angel’s father was made to pay ₹4,000 for a broken door. Vijay claimed this information was shared with the police but not adequately examined.
Demanding the harshest punishment, Vijay said the accused deserved the death penalty. Recalling Angel’s achievements, he described him as a bright, peaceful student with a secured job offer and the sole hope of his parents.
Highlighting the importance of the Northeast, Vijay said India is incomplete without the region and warned against discrimination, stressing that justice must be delivered to the grieving family.
