Agartala, July 7: Ramping up pressure on the BJP-led government in Tripura, the ruling alliance partner Tipra Motha party on Monday staged a protest procession in Agartala against alleged inaction on the issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The protest comes just a day after Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma raised similar concerns, aligning with Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s recent admission that Tripura is being used as a corridor by infiltrators.
Led by Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, the rally began from Swami Vivekananda Maidan and moved through key streets of the capital city, raising slogans demanding strict implementation of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)’s directives for identification, detention, and deportation of illegal migrants.
Speaking to the media, Ranjit Debbarma accused the Manik Saha government of indulging in “vote-bank politics,” and failing to act against infiltrators unlike BJP-ruled states such as Assam and Gujarat.
He said that the MHA has issued clear guidelines and neighbouring Assam has taken firm steps but in Tripura, the government is silent.
Debbarma questioning the state’s intent and urged to follow through with MHA’s orders.
On Sunday, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma had also flagged the infiltration issue, stating that the government cannot remain complacent while demographic changes threaten the identity and rights of the indigenous people.
Notably, even Chief Minister Dr. Saha recently admitted that Tripura was being used as a transit route by infiltrators — though he claimed that due to strict actions, most illegal entrants no longer prefer to settle in the state as they did earlier.
The Tipra Motha’s fresh agitation indicates a growing political rift within the BJP-led ruling alliance, especially amid heightened demands for implementation of the Tiprasa Accord and greater protection of indigenous rights.
