Agartala: April 20: On Sunday, Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Public Works and Water Resources Department of Tripura, visited Belonia to assess ongoing challenges related to border disputes and flood damage. He was joined by Ashwini Kumar, Inspector General of the Tripura Frontier Border Security Force (BSF). The visit began at the Belonia Circuit House, where Secretary Gitte held a meeting with officials from various border forces. A major point of discussion was the urgent need for restoring embankments along the India-Bangladesh border.
Following the meeting, the delegation visited North Belonia and Ballamukha under the Netaji Subhash Chandra Nagar and Ishan Chandra Nagar Gram Panchayats. These areas have reportedly seen unauthorized embankment construction by Bangladesh, potentially violating international agreements. The team included BSF IG Ashwini Kumar, Superintendent of Police Maurya Krishna, ADM Pradeep Kumar, SDM Debashish Das, and officials from the Water Resources and Public Works Departments.
Later, Secretary Gitte inspected the IC Nagar Nij Kalikapur border area before returning to the Circuit House. There, he held a crucial meeting with local leaders including Bharat Chandra Nagar Block Chairman Puthul Pal Biswas, Belonia Municipality Chairman Nikhil Chandra Gop, Rishyamukh Panchayat Samiti Chairman Shambhunath Kar, Mandal President Sayantan Dutta, and South District BJP President Dipayan Choudhury.
During the discussions, local representatives highlighted several pressing issues, particularly the lingering effects of the August floods. Secretary Gitte assured that restoration efforts were underway and promised that all remaining work would be completed within the next six months. He emphasized the state government’s commitment to resolving border tensions and improving disaster resilience in the South District.
