**Agartala, September 22:** The Tripura government has renewed its focus on road safety by calling for greater awareness, responsible driving and community participation to reduce accidents and save lives.
A district-level Road Safety Awareness and Sensitisation Programme was organised jointly by the West Tripura district administration and the Transport Department at the State Guest House, Sonar Tori, on Tuesday. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
Speaking at the event, Chowdhury said road safety efforts must extend beyond enforcement measures and involve a change in the behaviour and attitude of road users.
He appealed to drivers to obey traffic rules, adhere to speed limits and use helmets and seatbelts. He also urged people to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and remain alert to the safety of pedestrians.
“Alongside our own safety, we must value the lives of others,” Chowdhury said, urging drivers and pedestrians to act responsibly and contribute to safer roads.
Representatives of the district administration, police and Transport Department participated in the programme and discussed measures for preventing road accidents and ensuring safer traffic movement. The officials also underlined the importance of sustained public awareness campaigns.
The programme placed particular emphasis on the risks associated with reckless driving and the need for behavioural changes among motorists and other road users. Officials stressed that road safety requires cooperation from the entire community.
The programme ended with participants reaffirming the campaign message, “Safe Roads, Safe Lives”, and pledging to promote safer and more responsible road use across the state.
