Kumarghat, September 10: The Village Council election campaign is set to gather momentum in Kumarghat Block of Unakoti district after election officials completed scrutiny of nomination papers, clearing 225 candidates for 67 seats.
The scrutiny was conducted at the Kumarghat Panchayat Samiti hall on Wednesday in the presence of candidates and representatives of political parties. Block Development Officer and Returning Officer Sushanta Dutta oversaw the verification process.
According to Dutta, the scrutiny proceeded smoothly without any untoward incident. Security personnel were deployed around the venue to maintain law and order and ensure that candidates and party representatives could participate in the process without disruption.
The electoral field includes candidates backed by the BJP, TIPRA Motha, CPI(M) and Congress, besides independent contestants. With nominations now scrutinised, the competing candidates are expected to intensify voter outreach ahead of the September 28 polling.
The upcoming Village Council elections have assumed significance for the political parties as they seek to establish a stronger presence at the grassroots level. Campaigning is expected to centre on local development, civic amenities and issues affecting rural communities.
The administration has also stepped up vigilance at election-related locations. Officials said security arrangements would be reviewed periodically and strengthened wherever required as polling day approaches.
The completion of nomination scrutiny has effectively opened the next phase of the electoral schedule, with candidates preparing for campaigning and voter mobilisation across the 67 seats.
Authorities have appealed to political parties, candidates and their supporters to maintain peace and cooperate with election officials throughout the remaining stages of the process.
Polling for the Village Councils is scheduled for September 28, when voters will decide the representatives for the local bodies in Kumarghat Block.
