Agartala: Jan 15: In the Tripura Legislative Assembly, a critical issue regarding the construction of a high dam by Bangladesh along the Manu river was raised, with potential consequences for the Kailashahar region. Congress MLA Birjit Sinha voiced deep concerns about the dilapidated condition of the existing dam on the Indian side, which was constructed 40 years ago but has suffered from a lack of proper maintenance. He warned that the combination of the new dam in Bangladesh and heavy rainfall could lead to disastrous flooding in Kailashahar. Sinha urged immediate intervention to strengthen and maintain the dam infrastructure, which had been originally planned to extend 7 kilometers from Rangauti Gram Panchayat to Kailashahar town.
Minister Sudhanshu Das, representing Fatikroy constituency, echoed Sinha’s concerns, emphasizing the severe risk of flooding due to the higher dam in Bangladesh. Das also raised alarm about cross-border infiltration and illegal activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border, which he believed compounded the situation. He called for prompt action from the state government to address these multifaceted challenges.
In response, the Chief Minister assured the Assembly that the state government was already taking proactive steps to address the issue. He informed the House that a detailed report had been sent to the central government, requesting their intervention and assistance in finding a permanent solution. The Chief Minister’s commitment to tackling the matter highlighted the urgency of both flood prevention and cross-border security issues affecting the region.
