Agartala, January 5 : Farmers in Tripura have witnessed a significant increase in their incomes, more than doubling since the 2015-16 fiscal year, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national objective to enhance farmers’ earnings. Rajib Bhattacharjee, Tripura’s Rajya Sabha member and BJP state president, highlighted these achievements during a Kisan Morcha, BJP farmers wing, event in Agartala on Sunday.
According to Bhattacharjee in 2015-16 fiscal, the average monthly income of Tripura’s farmers stood at ₹6,580. Recent data indicates this figure has risen to ₹13,590, marking a substantial improvement attributed to initiatives by both the central and state BJP-led governments.
He emphasized the state’s progress in distributing Kisan Credit Cards, implementing the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, and issuing Soil Health Cards. The state government have facilitated farmers in selling paddy at Minimum Support Prices (MSP) through the Food Corporation of India (FCI). Additionally, the export of various crops even outside the country has provided farmers with better prices, thereby boosting their incomes.
The government has also provided advanced scientific and technological support, modern equipment, and high-quality seeds and fertilizers at subsidized rates. These efforts have enhanced land productivity, steering the state towards self-sufficiency in food grain production.
In February 2016, PM Modi had promised doubling of farmers’ income by 2022 and Tripura according to Bhattacharjee is perhaps is the first state in doubling the farmers income.
Meantime, Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath, speaking to reporters at the 53rd Annual Conference of the Tripura Agriculture Graduates’ Association, noted that despite limited agricultural land, Tripura ranks sixth among Indian states in productivity rates.
He reported that three of the state’s eight districts have achieved self-sufficiency in food grain production, with three others nearing this milestone. The Agriculture Department is actively working to enhance productivity in the remaining two districts.
These developments reflect the state’s commitment to improving the agricultural sector and the livelihoods of its farmers, in line with national goals.
