Agartala: Dec 23: Kriti Debi Singha, the Member of Parliament (MP) from East Tripura, had written to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, requesting the establishment of a medical college and hospital similar to AIIMS in the ADC (Autonomous District Council) area. In his response, the Union Health Minister stated that there are currently no plans to establish an AIIMS-like medical college and hospital in Tripura. However, he assured that the Union Health Ministry would provide prompt assistance if the Tripura government submits a proposal for the development of healthcare infrastructure in the region.
In his letter, the Union Health Minister noted that under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), an AIIMS has already been set up in Assam to strengthen healthcare facilities in the Northeast. Additionally, he mentioned that Agartala Medical College has been approved for an upgrade under the PMSSY, with the construction of a super-specialty block. However, there are no current proposals under the PMSSY for establishing an AIIMS-like medical college and hospital in Tripura.
The Minister further emphasized that the National Health Mission (NHM), under the Union Health Ministry, offers both financial and technical support to various states and Union Territories for the improvement of healthcare infrastructure. He assured that if the Tripura government submits a proposal for enhancing healthcare services in the East Tripura parliamentary constituency, it will be duly considered. The Union Health Ministry would respond swiftly and provide the necessary assistance to support the development of healthcare in the region.
This response highlights the Union Health Minister’s commitment to improving healthcare facilities in Tripura, while also providing an avenue for the state to request further support for infrastructure development.
