Agartala, December 19: The capital city of Agartala is all set to host the 72nd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) on December 21, with extensive preparations underway for the arrival of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Chief Ministers and Governors of all eight northeastern states.
The main event will be held at Pragnya Bhavan, where critical issues related to the development and connectivity of the northeastern region are likely to be discussed.
The visiting dignitaries will also explore Agartala’s iconic Ujjayanta Palace as part of their scheduled itinerary.
Chief Minister Manik Saha alongwith Chief Secretary JK Sinha, DGP Amitabh Ranjan had earlier visited and inspected the crucial venues of the meetings.
Agartala is witnessing a rapid transformation ahead of the high-profile event, with major roads cleaned and illuminated.
Enhanced security measures are being implemented along key routes, including from Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport to prominent hotels and the meeting venues, to ensure smooth movement for the VVIP delegations. Security in the border with Bangladesh have been intensified.
On the following day, December 22, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit a Bru displaced population settlement camp in Dhalai district.
He is expected to address a public meeting there, marking what is seen as the informal launch of the BJP’s campaign for the upcoming village committee elections in Tripura. The elections, slated for early next year, are considered a crucial test of the ruling party’s popularity especially in the tribal belt where its alliance partner TIPRA Motha has been dominating.
The NEC Plenary Session comes at a significant time, as the Centre continues its focus on strengthening connectivity and boosting development in the Northeast. The gathering of key leaders and stakeholders from across the region underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing challenges and fostering growth.
With Agartala donning a new look and security arrangements at an all-time high, the city is ready to welcome one of the most prominent events on its political and developmental calendar.
