Agartala, December 16: The Indian Army paid a grand tribute to the valour and sacrifices of soldiers on the occasion of the 53rd Vijay Diwas, commemorating India’s historic victory in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, through a series of events at the iconic Albert Ekka War Memorial in Agartala.
The solemn ceremonies were led by Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu and Minister Santana Chakma, alongside the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Red Shield Division and other senior Indian Army officials.
The occasion served as a powerful reminder of the bravery and sacrifices made by Indian soldiers in the decisive battle that liberated Bangladesh.
Tripura played a crucial role during the Liberation War as it was a strategic base for launching major Indian Army offensives.
The local population extended unwavering support to the war efforts, further cementing the region’s significance in history.
Meantime, civilians also paid tribute to the brave soldiers on the day.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Nallu highlighted the monumental surrender of 90,000 Pakistani soldiers on December 16, 1971 — the largest surrender in war history.
He also honored the memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice to ensure Bangladesh’s liberation from East Pakistan.
Adding to the patriotic fervor, the Governor welcomed the arrival of the cycling expedition titled “Pedalling Patriots: II”, which started on December 2 from Dimapur and was flagged off by Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar, GOC 3 Corps.
The cyclists traversed across regions, engaging with local communities, honoring war veterans and Veer Naris, and distributing medical assistive devices like wheelchairs and walking sticks to the needy.
In a gesture symbolizing unity and goodwill, an exchange of sweets took place between Indian and Bangladesh forces at the Akhaura Integrated Check Post (ICP), showcasing the enduring friendship between the two nations.
The atmosphere at the memorial was charged with patriotism as civilians and dignitaries alike paid homage to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the 1971 war. The event underscored the importance of remembering and honoring the sacrifices that shaped the region’s history and secured a decisive victory for India.
