Agartala, January 30:On the solemn occasion of the 76th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Tripura’s Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, accompanied by Minister Sanatan Chakma and other dignitaries, paid heartfelt floral tributes to the Father of the Nation. The ceremony took place at his statue in the Circuit House area and Gandhighat in Agartala.
Representatives from various religions joined together at Gandhighat, singing some of Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite songs in a tribute to his legacy.
The day, observed as Martyrs’ Day or ‘Shaheed Diwas,’ commemorates those who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence.
Martyrs’ Day is especially significant as it marks the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948.
The nation remembers this day with reverence as Gandhiji, affectionately known as Bapu, was assassinated by Nathuram Godse during the evening prayers at ‘Gandhi Smriti’ in the Birla House in New Delhi.
Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, speaking to reporters, highlighted Mahatma Gandhi’s pivotal role in India’s struggle for freedom. Emphasizing Gandhi’s commitment to peaceful and non-violent methods, the Governor remarked on how Tripura and the nation continue to develop by following his path.
Annually, the country observes ‘Mahatma Gandhi Punyatithi’ to remember and honor the enduring legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
Globally known for his advocacy of peace and non-violence, Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary on October 2 is recognized as the International Day of Non-Violence.
In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly designated this day to honor Gandhi’s principles and raise awareness about the significance of non-violence in promoting peace, harmony, and unity worldwide.
