Agartala: The Tripura government is strategizing to increase its power exports to Bangladesh in response to Bangladesh’s substantial power deficit, ranging from 1,200 to 1,400 megawatts. Ratan Lal Nath, the Power Minister, disclosed this plan during a visit to the Surjya Mani Nagar 132 KV power sub-station. Currently, Tripura exports approximately 200 megawatts to Bangladesh, given their geographical proximity. Nevertheless, despite this supply, Bangladesh continues to grapple with a significant power shortage.
Nath emphasized the need to enhance power generation to fulfill this endeavor. The Central government recently sanctioned the establishment of the North East’s first 400 KV power station in Tripura, further underscoring the state’s commitment to increasing power production.
Moreover, domestic power consumption in Tripura has been on the rise over the past few years, with forecasts indicating that it could reach 700 megawatts by 2030-31. When combined with the 200 megawatts already exported to Bangladesh, the state’s total power demand is anticipated to exceed 900 megawatts. Tripura’s power export expansion not only aims to support Bangladesh’s energy needs but also provides a potential revenue source for the state government.
The Power Minister also informed the media persons that adequate measures are being undertaken to convert the state into a power generation hub. “Rukhia thermal power plant is being modernized with combined power general technology. More emphasis is being given in strengthening the transmission so that uninterrupted electricity services could provided to all”, he added.
