Agartala, Oct 27 : Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Customs Department, seized 1,500 bottles of ESCUF syrup worth approximately Rs 15 lakh from Tripura’s Khowai district, officials said on Tuesday.
The seizure was made on October 26 in the Singicherra area following specific intelligence inputs and sustained surveillance by security agencies, they said.
Acting on the inputs, a joint team of Assam Rifles and Customs personnel launched a search operation in the area and recovered a consignment of ESCUF syrup allegedly concealed to evade detection.
The seized consignment is estimated to be worth around Rs 15 lakh in the illegal market, officials said, adding that the operation was aimed at preventing the unauthorised transportation of pharmaceutical products.
The seizure is part of ongoing efforts by security and enforcement agencies to curb the illegal movement of pharmaceutical substances and suspected controlled drugs across the northeastern region.
Officials said the operation was conducted through coordinated intelligence gathering and prompt action by the joint team. The consignment was intercepted before it could be transported to its intended destination.
Following the seizure, the entire consignment was handed over to the Customs Department for further investigation and necessary legal proceedings.
Authorities are investigating the source of the consignment, its intended recipients and the circumstances under which the syrup was being transported. They are also examining whether the seizure has any links to wider smuggling networks operating in the region.
Assam Rifles and other enforcement agencies have been conducting intelligence-based operations to detect and prevent the trafficking of narcotics and pharmaceutical substances in the Northeast.
Given the region’s geographical location, security agencies maintain vigilance against cross-border smuggling and the illegal movement of prohibited goods.
Officials reiterated their commitment to strengthening intelligence-based operations and coordination among enforcement departments to identify suspected trafficking channels and take action against those involved in illegal activities.
The latest recovery is expected to form part of the ongoing investigation into the movement of the consignment and the network, if any, behind its transportation.
Further details regarding the ownership of the seized consignment and the outcome of the investigation are awaited.
