Agartala, Oct 27 : The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday launched a Rs 1.5-crore project to renovate and beautify a pond adjacent to Women’s College in Ward No. 22, as part of efforts to improve urban infrastructure, conserve waterbodies and enhance public spaces.
The foundation stone for the project was laid at Lal Bahadur Chowmuhani in the presence of Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta, Ward No. 22 Councillor Himani Debbarma and other dignitaries.
According to civic officials, the project will involve renovation of the pond and development of its surrounding area to create a clean, attractive and well-maintained public space. The initiative is also expected to improve the local environment and contribute to the city’s ongoing urban renewal efforts.
Addressing the gathering, Majumder said the municipal corporation had been working consistently over the past several years to improve civic services, address residents’ concerns and make Agartala cleaner and more beautiful.
Referring to the city’s waterlogging problem, the mayor said several localities that earlier experienced severe inundation even after brief spells of rain had witnessed considerable improvement following the installation of pumping systems and other drainage-related measures.
He said the civic body would take further steps to strengthen the drainage network and address waterlogging more effectively, particularly during the monsoon.
Majumder also urged residents to cooperate with the municipal authorities in maintaining cleanliness and ensuring proper waste disposal.
He appealed to people to use designated garbage disposal points and the AMC’s door-to-door waste collection service instead of dumping refuse in open spaces, drains and waterbodies.
Improper waste disposal can block drainage channels and aggravate waterlogging during the rainy season, he said.
Emphasising the importance of public participation, the mayor said sustained improvements in civic infrastructure and sanitation could be achieved only through cooperation between residents and the municipal corporation.
He also highlighted the AMC’s efforts to clean, restore and rejuvenate neglected ponds and other waterbodies across Agartala. These initiatives are aimed at preserving natural resources, improving environmental conditions and developing waterbodies as community assets.
The Women’s College pond project is part of the corporation’s broader initiative to combine urban beautification with environmental conservation.
Civic officials expressed hope that the redevelopment would enhance the area’s appearance, provide residents with a better-maintained public space and contribute to Agartala’s overall urban development after completion.
