Agartala, October 22: The Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) on Thursday submitted a complaint to Additional Superintendent of Police (Urban, West Tripura) Dhruba Nath, seeking registration of an FIR over the alleged harassment, regional insult and inappropriate physical contact involving a youth from Tripura.
The complaint follows the circulation of a video on social media purportedly showing self-styled content creator Amir Shokeen allegedly derogatory remarks against the youth and Tripura. The allegations have triggered condemnation from organisations across the state and region.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the police officer, TSF general secretary Hamalu Jamatia said the organisation had sought action in connection with the incident and urged the government to take the matter seriously.
“This is not the first time people from the Northeast have faced harassment. There have been several incidents of harassment, assault and even murder in the past,” Jamatia said.
He said people from the Northeast should not have to repeatedly prove their Indian identity and called for stronger measures to protect them from racial discrimination and harassment outside the region.
Jamatia urged the Centre and the concerned authorities to ensure that such incidents did not recur. He also called for solidarity among people across the Northeast in seeking justice.
According to Jamatia, the Additional SP assured the delegation that Tripura Police would send a team to New Delhi to pursue the case and take necessary legal steps. He said the police had received the complaint and that the delegation had been informed of the proposed action.
Reportedly Shokeen have seakeked apology. Meantime, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio has directed DGP GS Rao to coordinate with Delhi Police over derogatory remarks made by the said content creator against the youth of Tripura and law will take its own course of action.
