Agartala, Oct 9 : Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Customs Department, seized 501 kg of ganja worth approximately Rs 2.5 crore during a joint operation in Tripura’s Khowai district, officials said on Friday.
The operation was conducted on October 8 based on intelligence inputs and sustained surveillance aimed at intercepting suspected narcotics trafficking activities in the region, they said.
According to an official release, the joint team launched a pursuit of a suspected vehicle from West Sonatala after receiving information about the movement of the contraband.
The chase continued towards the general area of Baikhuntapur village, located near the boundary between West Tripura and Khowai districts, around 18 km short of Hezamara block.
During the operation, the suspected smugglers allegedly abandoned the contraband at an isolated location near Baikhuntapur village before fleeing, the release said.
The security personnel subsequently recovered 501 kg of ganja, with an estimated market value of Rs 2.50 crore.
No information about any arrests was provided in the release.
The seized contraband was handed over to Customs authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings, officials said.
The operation was part of ongoing efforts by Assam Rifles and other agencies to curb narcotics trafficking and disrupt networks involved in the illegal movement of drugs through the Northeast.
The region’s proximity to international borders and its transport links have made coordinated surveillance and intelligence-sharing important components of anti-narcotics operations.
The joint action also highlighted cooperation between security forces and civilian enforcement agencies in detecting and intercepting suspected drug consignments.
Officials said the recovery demonstrated the importance of intelligence-led operations and sustained monitoring in areas suspected to be used for narcotics transportation.
Further investigation is expected to establish the source of the seized ganja, its intended destination and the identities of those involved in the suspected trafficking operation.
The Assam Rifles reiterated its commitment to working with partner agencies to combat narcotics trafficking and prevent illegal drugs from reaching communities across the Northeast.
