Agartala, Oct 7:
Tripura Leader of the Opposition and CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury on Wednesday described TIPRA Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma’s reported decision to step away from active politics as a “personal matter”, while expressing concern over his health and wishing him a full recovery.
Speaking to reporters in response to Debbarma’s announcement during a live interaction on social media that he would leave active politics from next month, Chaudhury said the immediate priority should be the health of the TIPRA Motha leader rather than the political implications of his decision.
“He has said that he is not physically well. Whether he will continue in politics or not is a secondary matter,” Chaudhury said.
Chaudhury said Debbarma could subsequently choose to engage in politics, social work or any other activity, but stressed that he would need to regain his health and physical strength first.
“I would first say that after hearing all these things, he should become 100 per cent healthy,” Chaudhury said, noting that Debbarma was not very old and was around 50 or slightly above.
Describing Debbarma as an important figure in Tripura, Chaudhury said his future course of action should be left to him.
“He is an important person in our state. Everybody knows him. Whatever work he takes up, he needs physical capability,” the CPI(M) leader said.
Chaudhury also referred to advances in medical science and expressed hope that Debbarma would recover fully and return to public life with renewed energy.
“Whether he will do politics or not, we are here and we will see,” he said, adding that he did not want to make any further comment on whether Debbarma’s decision would prove politically successful.
Chaudhury said the people of Tripura had witnessed the political developments involving Debbarma and would judge the situation in due course.
His comments came against the backdrop of Debbarma’s announcement that he plans to leave active politics from next month, citing his personal circumstances and health.
Chaudhury maintained that the political aspect could be considered later, reiterating that his primary wish was for Debbarma to recover completely and lead a peaceful and active life, irrespective of whether he remained in electoral politics or chose another sphere of public activity.
