Agartala, Oct 7:
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday said he would speak to Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma before commenting on his decision to step away from active politics, saying the latter’s announcement on social media appeared to indicate that he was serious about the move.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Tripura Government Homeopathic Medical College and Netaji Subhash Homeopathic Hospital at Renters’ Colony here, Saha said he did not know the reasons behind Debbarma’s decision and would be able to give a clearer response only after speaking to him.
“Since he has said it on social media, I will speak to him. Only after speaking to him in depth will I be able to tell you what is actually behind it,” Saha said.
Asked whether the announcement could have any impact on the state’s political situation, particularly in the wake of the recently concluded Village Council elections, Saha said he would not like to comment without first understanding Debbarma’s reasons.
Saha also indicated that Debbarma had spoken earlier about moving away from active politics, but he had not taken those earlier remarks as seriously as the latest announcement.
Debbarma’s latest announcement came a day after Tipra Motha’s strong performance in the Village Council elections. Tipra Motha is a partner of the BJP-led alliance in Tripura.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid a new political development in the state following Debbarma’s announcement that he would step away from active politics after next month. Saha’s decision to first speak to Debbarma before assessing the implications also leaves open the question of how the move could affect the political functioning of the alliance and Tipra Motha’s future leadership.
The Chief Minister was speaking after inaugurating the state government’s Homeopathic Medical College and Netaji Subhash Homeopathic Hospital, which has commenced its academic session for 2026-27.
