Agartala, September 25: With Durga Puja expected to bring heavier traffic and increased pedestrian movement to Agartala, the Traffic Police has drawn up a comprehensive plan focusing on congestion control, parking discipline, vehicle restrictions and regulation of Puja passes.
Traffic SP Kanta Jangir said the arrangements were discussed during a press conference at Traffic Bhavan in the AD Nagar police line on Friday.
She said Nagerjala Bridge, City Centre and Orient Chowmuhani had been identified among the locations likely to witness increased congestion during the festival. Traffic personnel will assess the situation at these points and modify movement arrangements depending on vehicle volume.
The Traffic Police will also keep a close watch on unauthorised parking in crowded market areas, breaches of one-way and no-entry restrictions and heavy vehicles remaining parked on roads for extended periods.
Jangir said the department had already engaged with traders, market committees and residents of Maharajganj Bazar to discuss local traffic problems and identify measures to reduce congestion.
She urged motorists and other road users to cooperate with the enforcement teams, follow traffic regulations and park only at designated locations. According to the Traffic SP, coordination and surveillance will be intensified at key points throughout the Puja period.
The department has also decided to enforce stricter norms for Puja passes. Jangir said applicants with outstanding traffic challans would not be issued passes, in line with directions from Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha.
Efforts are underway with the Directorate of Information Technology (DIT) to develop a digital system for Puja pass issuance. The proposed mechanism is intended to simplify the process and prevent difficulties in managing applications.
On challan payments, Jangir said violations recorded before April 2026 could be settled through the e-Challan portal, Virtual Court or the physical court.
For challans issued after April 2026, payment would have to be made through the Traffic Unit and such cases would not be referred to court, she said.
The Traffic Police has also initiated steps towards implementing the Next-Gen Challan system, Jangir said.
As part of the Puja traffic plan, no-entry restrictions will operate across the city from 5 pm to 1 am during the Puja days.
Jangir appealed to citizens, traders, transport operators and other stakeholders to cooperate with the Traffic Police and adhere to the restrictions to facilitate smooth and safe movement during the festival.
