The BSF seized dry ganja, estimated to be worth around Rs 23.75 lakh, during an early-morning patrol along the UNC Nagar-Fakiradola border road just next to Bangladesh in Tripura’s Sonamura area, police said.
Sonamura police station officer-in-charge Inspector Tapas Das said the contraband was recovered from different locations in a forested area during the patrol and was found abandoned.
The recovered ganja was contained in 42 packets, which were found scattered at different places, he said. The packets were subsequently collected and weighed, with the total quantity found to be 47 kg 500 grams.
The contraband was seized as unclaimed after completion of all legal formalities, Das said.
Sonamura police station has since started an investigation to ascertain the ownership of the seized contraband and identify those involved in keeping it there, he said.
The operation was carried out by personnel of the BSF’s 81st Battalion, Das added.
Police suspect the contraband had been kept in the area for subsequent smuggling into Bangladesh.
