**Agartala, September 13:** A 28-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death following a confrontation in Tripura’s Kamalasagar area on Saturday night, with relatives attributing the incident to a dispute over her marriage.
The victim, Sujita Deb, was allegedly attacked while returning to Nehal Chandra Nagar after visiting the annual fair at Kasba Kali temple. She was accompanied by her sister Pinki Deb at the time.
According to relatives, Sujita and Pinki were stopped on the road by Sujita’s father-in-law, Sanjit Nama, and brother-in-law, Nayan Nama. A verbal altercation reportedly followed, during which Sujita’s husband Pritam Nama and Pinki tried to intervene.
The situation allegedly turned violent when Nayan attacked Sujita with a knife. She sustained multiple injuries and collapsed on the roadside.
She was initially taken to Madhupur Hospital and was later referred to TMC and GB Pant Hospital. Despite being shifted for further medical treatment, she was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the strained relationship between Sujita and her husband’s family. Pritam told the media that Sujita was his second wife and said his earlier marriage had ended in separation.
Pritam said he married Sujita around three years ago but alleged that his family had opposed the marriage. He said the couple had since been living in rented accommodation separately from his family.
Pinki, who said she had been staying with Sujita since August 28, said they had attended the Kasba Kali temple fair before heading home on Saturday night.
She alleged that Sanjit and Nayan stopped them on the way back and began confronting Sujita. According to Pinki, an argument followed between the family members and the situation subsequently escalated into the alleged knife attack.
The precise circumstances that led to the confrontation and the sequence of events preceding the stabbing are yet to be established.
Sujita’s mother and brother have demanded strict punishment for those allegedly involved in the incident.
Further details regarding the case and the legal action taken are awaited.
