Agartala, March 22:
With the by-election to Tripura’s Dharmanagar Assembly constituency slated for April 9, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Sunday projected a confident outlook for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that the party is poised not only to retain the seat but to widen its previous victory margin.
Speaking to reporters after an organisational meeting in Dharmanagar, Saha described BJP nominee Jahar Chakraborty as a seasoned and widely accepted figure within the party, underscoring his long-standing organisational experience as a key electoral advantage.
The Chief Minister maintained that the opposition is unlikely to mount a serious challenge in the constituency, expressing confidence that the BJP’s grassroots network and cadre mobilisation would translate into a decisive electoral outcome.
He noted that the enthusiasm among party workers, evident during the meeting, would drive an intensive door-to-door outreach campaign in the coming days.
The by-election was necessitated by the demise of former Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen, whose electoral performance in the constituency, Saha said, had set a benchmark for the party.
Camping in Dharmanagar ahead of the nomination filing scheduled for Monday, the Chief Minister said the campaign would centre on development initiatives undertaken during the BJP’s tenure.
He highlighted improvements in infrastructure, delivery of welfare schemes, and governance reforms as central to the party’s pitch to voters.
Reiterating the party’s strategy, Saha said BJP leaders and workers would reach out to households across the constituency to communicate the government’s achievements and reinforce support at the grassroots level.
The Dharmanagar by-poll is being closely tracked as a litmus test of the BJP’s continued electoral dominance in Tripura, particularly in the politically significant northern belt where contests have often been closely fought.
