Agartala, September 11: An ambulance became an emergency delivery room in Tripura when a woman gave birth while being transported to hospital, with EMT Prasenjit Sukla Baidya successfully handling the delivery, officials said.
The woman, 25-year-old Pusti Rung Reang, wife of Janmajoy Reang and a resident of Krishnatilla, was being shifted from the Kumarghat Primary Health Centre to Unakoti District Hospital on Friday when she went into labour.
As the ambulance was still en route, Baidya quickly responded to the situation and conducted the delivery inside the vehicle. The newborn was delivered safely, and both the mother and baby were reported to be in good health.
Officials said the incident was particularly notable as it marked Baidya’s fourth successful delivery inside an ambulance. His experience and presence of mind helped him manage the emergency before the patient could reach the hospital.
The case has highlighted the role of EMTs in providing immediate medical support during patient transportation, especially in areas where travel to a healthcare facility can take considerable time.
The ambulance operates under Tripura’s 102 Ambulance Project, launched in March 2020 through a memorandum of understanding between the Community Action Through Motivation Programme (CAMP) and the National Health Mission (NHM).
The project was inaugurated by then Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb with the aim of strengthening emergency transport services and improving access to healthcare across the state.
The latest incident has underscored that ambulance services can play a much wider role than simply transporting patients. In emergencies that occur on the way to hospital, trained EMTs can provide vital assistance and help stabilise patients until they reach definitive medical care.
Officials appreciated Baidya’s prompt intervention, describing the incident as an example of how trained frontline personnel can respond effectively under pressure and ensure emergency care continues even while patients are in transit.
