Agartala, November 24:A young man, suspected to be involved in cross-border smuggling, sustained a bullet injury after Border Security Force (BSF) personnel allegedly opened fire to thwart an illegal smuggling attempt along the Indo-Bangladesh border at Brajendranagar in North Tripura on Monday.
The injured youth has been identified as Akash Das (25), originally a Bangladeshi, has been illegal staying in Ward No. 2 under Agnipassa Gram Panchayat in North Tripura district, said a senior BSF officers on condition of anonymity.
Akash was reportedly cutting the barbed-wire fencing to smuggle goods into Bangladesh when personnel of the BSF’s 97th Battalion, C Company, alerted him near border fencing line pillar 138–139, close to Gate No. 10. As the situation grew tense, BSF personnel fired a round to control the situation, which allegedly hit him in the abdomen.
Akash was rushed to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where attending doctor Shaolima Ghose confirmed that he had suffered a bullet injury and was bleeding profusely.
“BSF personnel brought in the bullet injured patient Akash Das, 25. We provided immediate treatment, including blood transfusion and antibiotics. A surgeon has been called to evaluate his condition and decide on further steps,” she said.
She further added that it was unclear whether the bullet remained lodged inside his abdomen. “Only after opening the abdomen during surgery, we can be sure,” she said.
The patient was later referred to AGMC & GBP Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment after consultation with the surgical team.
The incident triggered brief tension in the area, though local authorities confirmed that the situation has since been brought under control. Both the BSF and the local police have initiated separate investigations into the alleged smuggling attempt and the firing.
