Agartala, June 15: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 14-year-old boy died after accidentally getting strangled by a piece of cloth he had tied to a ceiling beam for physical exercise on Sunday in his house in Durgapur area of Kailashahar, Unakoti district. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the entire locality.
The deceased, Monomoy Das, a student of Class 8, was the son of one Montosh Das—a resident of Ward No. 14 under Kailashahar Municipal Council. Monomoy was alone at home in the afternoon when the incident occurred.
He used a ladder to tie a cloth to the ceiling of a room intending to perform hanging-style physical exercises, a routine he had been following recently to cope with his growing physique.
Tragically, the cloth got accidentally entangled around his neck, leading to suffocation and death. Family members returned home after some time and were devastated to find Monomoy hanging inside the room. They raised an alarm, and the police from Kailashahar Police Station were immediately informed.
Kailashahar Police, led by officer Ashish Das, rushed to the spot and recovered the body, which was then taken to Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Sub-Divisional Hospital. Officer Das confirmed the details of the incident to the media.
Speaking on the tragedy, local resident Milon Das shared that Monomoy’s father Montosh earns a living by selling biscuits on an e-rickshaw, while his mother works as a domestic help. Despite financial struggles, the parents were committed to educating their two sons. Monomoy was known to be a brilliant and soft-spoken student, loved by all in the neighbourhood.
He had recently begun doing regular physical exercises inside his room due to his physical growth. Initially using ropes to hang, Monomoy had switched to a cloth to avoid hand pain. Unfortunately, it was this cloth that caused his untimely death.
The entire locality mourned the loss of Monomoy, who was described as cheerful, chubby, and affectionate. His sudden demise has left the community in disbelief and sorrow.
