Agartala, April 14: The 135th birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, was celebrated with great reverence across Agartala on Monday through a series of events honouring his enduring legacy.
The main programme was held at the historic Ujjayanta Palace, where Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, SC Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das, and senior officials paid floral tributes to the revered leader.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Saha said, “Dr Ambedkar’s ideas received recognition much later than deserved, but today our government is committed to walking the path he showed, especially for the upliftment of the backward and poor.”
Highlighting Ambedkar’s multifaceted personality—as a philosopher, economist, social reformer, and freedom fighter—Saha emphasized the importance of educating the younger generation about Ambedkar’s struggles and achievements.
“He was born in a backward family, yet he rose to become a figure whom every Indian respects. His life continues to inspire millions,” the Chief Minister said.
Referring to Ambedkar’s role as the first Law Minister of Independent India and the chief architect of the Constitution, Saha recalled the discrimination he endured and how his contributions were acknowledged only decades later with the Bharat Ratna in 1990.
Reiterating his government’s commitment, Saha noted that Tripura is not limiting itself to symbolic tributes. “We are implementing his vision through free education, scholarships, stipends, hostels, and other support systems for the backward and poor,” he added.
Saha also recalled the installation of Dr Ambedkar’s bronze statue in front of the State Assembly in December 2023, under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative.
Meantime, SC Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das also spoke on the life and role of Dr Ambedkar especially for the upliftment of the downtrodden.
Earlier in the day, the Youth Affairs and Sports Department organized a ‘Jai Bheem Paryatra’ rally, which witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, NSS volunteers, and sanitation workers.
The rally began at Ramabhadra Satabarshiki Bhavan and proceeded through the streets of the capital.
Meanwhile, both the Tripura Pradesh Congress and the BJP paid their respects to Dr Ambedkar at their respective party headquarters, underlining his universal appeal across political lines.
