The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tripura has been postponed by over a month following the announcement of Village Committee elections and requests from political parties to defer the exercise, Chief Electoral Officer Brijesh Pandey said on Thursday.
Pandey told reporters that the SIR had commenced on September 5, but the State Election Commission subsequently announced the Village Committee elections, leading to increased political activity and requests from various quarters for rescheduling of the electoral roll revision.
“Political activity will naturally take place” during the elections, Pandey said, adding that the CEO’s office had requested the Election Commission to consider the matter and the exercise was subsequently rescheduled.
Under the revised schedule, the SIR’s preliminary internal work will begin from October 27, while the enumeration exercise will be conducted from November 6 to December 5. During this period, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will undertake door-to-door visits with printed enumeration forms and collect the required information, he said.
The draft electoral roll will now be published on December 12, followed by the claims and objections process. The final electoral roll will be published on February 15, 2027, Pandey said.
The qualifying date for the revised electoral roll has also been changed to January 1, 2027, from the earlier schedule.
“These are the changes. The rest of the activities will remain the same. The rules, regulations and guidelines will also remain the same,” Pandey said.
He said instructions regarding the revised schedule had already been issued to the Electoral Registration Officers and other officials. The information has also been uploaded on the Chief Electoral Officer’s website and shared with political parties.
The revised schedule means that the SIR exercise, which had been scheduled to begin on September 5, will now formally commence on October 27, while the door-to-door enumeration activity earlier scheduled from September 15 will instead begin on November 6.
