Agartala: April 14: Amid the ongoing controversy over the replacement of the late Baidyanath Majumdar’s statue with that of Lord Ram, Chandipur MLA and Tripura Minister Tinku Roy on Sunday made a significant statement. Reacting to criticisms from the opposition, Roy said that if CPI(M) leaders wish to erect a statue of Baidyanath Majumdar in front of their party office, they will receive all necessary support.
Roy dismissed allegations that the BJP was involved in replacing the statue of Baidyanath Majumdar, a revered Left leader. According to him, the original statue was demolished in 2018 due to public resentment and road safety concerns. “People had expressed anger over the statue. Several traffic accidents occurred at that spot, and many locals filed written complaints to have it removed,” he said.
Clarifying BJP’s stance, Roy emphasized that the party had no role in the installation of the new Ram statue. “We don’t know who put up the Ram statue. It was not installed by the BJP. The Left is only trying to mislead the people,” he said.
Roy reiterated that the people of Tripura had rejected the 25 years of Left misrule, and the opposition was now attempting to use this statue issue to regain lost ground. “They are politicizing everything, but the public is aware,” he added.
His comments have sparked fresh debate in political circles, especially as tensions continue over the sudden appearance of the Ram statue. Meanwhile, the CPI(M) is reportedly considering whether to respond to the minister’s offer or take alternative action regarding Baidyanath Majumdar’s legacy.
The administration is yet to clarify who authorized the installation of the Ram statue.
