Agartala, February 25: In a major crackdown on cross-border infiltration and drug trafficking, Agartala GRP police, along with BSF, RPF, and intelligence agencies, arrested three individuals, including two Bangladeshi nationals and an Indian tout, at Agartala railway station said a GRP official.
According to Agartala GRP police station in-charge Inspector Tapas Das, last night the arrested individuals were attempting to travel to Kolkata after illegally crossing the India-Bangladesh border.
They were identified as Arafat Hossain (29) and Jinat Era (34), both residents of Dhaka, Bangladesh, who were accompanied by Jinat’s two-year-old child.
The Indian tout, identified as Sachin Kumar (22) from Samastipur, Bihar, allegedly facilitated their illegal entry and was escorting them.
Authorities suspect their involvement in a larger cross-border network. A case has been registered under the Indian Passport Act, Foreigner’s Act, and BNS, and they will be produced before the court with a plea for police remand.
In a separate operation, Agartala GRP police and RPF also apprehended two suspected drug peddlers from Agartala railway station. The accused were in possession of 37.005 kg of dried cannabis (ganja), concealed in two trolleys and a handbag, which they planned to transport to another state via train.
The arrested individuals, a father-son duo from Assam, were identified as Narayan Debnath (63) and Shankar Debnath (29), residents of Chandrapur, Kamrup Metro. The estimated market value of the seized ganja is ₹5.55 lakh.
A case under the NDPS Act has been registered, and police are conducting further investigations. Authorities believe that more individuals may be linked to the drug network, and further arrests are expected.
Meanwhile, security measures at Agartala railway station have been tightened to curb illegal border crossings and drug trafficking.
