Agartala, November 8: The Mahila Congress of Tripura staged a strong protest on Friday, alleging the Tripura Commission for Women’s inaction amid rising incidents of rapes, dowry-related violence, and abuses against women and girls in the state.
The demonstrators expressed their anger over what they termed as the commission’s “deafening silence” on recent cases that have shocked the state.
Members of the Sadar Mahila Congress took to the streets of capital Agartala with banners and placards, rallying to the office of the Tripura Women’s Commission.
In a symbolic gesture to highlight their frustration, the protesters tied black ribbons over their mouths, signifying the commission’s failure to speak up against the surge in crimes targeting women.
The rally culminated in a silent protest in front of the commission’s office, where Mahila Congress activists gathered to convey their disappointment.
The protesters alleged that despite a spate of violent incidents against women, the commission has remained inactive.
“Women in Tripura are facing unprecedented levels of violence, including rapes, sexual assaults, and even young girls are not safe, yet the Tripura Commission for Women remains mute and it seems sleeping. Today, we are here to awaken them from their slumber,” said a Rupa Roy Das, protesting Mahila Congress leader.
The protestors viewed that the role of the Tripura Women’s Commission is to protect the rights of women and ensure their safety, but their silence is emboldening the perpetrators. They urged the commission to actively intervene, investigate these cases, and ensure justice for the victims.
The demonstration ended peacefully and the protestors also called for the state government to prioritize women’s safety and implement stricter measures to curb the rising crimes.
Recently the Tripura Human Rights Commission based on media reporters took suo motu cognizance of two disturbing cases: one involving a woman who was reportedly paraded naked after being physically assaulted, and another where a young couple was allegedly forced into marriage under duress.
