Agartala: Oct 01: The Durga Puja of the Udichi Club in East Shibnagar, Agartala, which was initially canceled due to allegations of extortion and violence, has now been reinstated.
The controversy began when a group of individuals, allegedly led by the club’s secretary, Vishwajit Ghosh, visited the residence of local dentist Pritam Deb Roy and demanded a donation. When the dentist’s family refused, they were allegedly assaulted, and their house was vandalized. The dentist subsequently filed a police complaint.
Following the incident, the district administration, under media scrutiny, canceled the permission for the Durga Puja. However, the Udichi Club later claimed that they had received permission to resume the puja due to the intervention of a local influential figure, Rajib Bhattacharya.
In a press conference, the club president, Subir Debbarma, stated that there had been a misunderstanding with the dentist’s family, which had been resolved. However, he did not explicitly mention receiving permission from the district administration.
This has led to confusion among the locals, raising questions about the consistency of the district administration’s decision and the lack of police action against those involved in the alleged violence.
