Agartala, August 27: In a significant breakthrough, the West Tripura district police have apprehended two notorious chain snatchers who had been preying on lonely women during their morning walks in Agartala.
The arrests, made last evening, have brought much-needed relief to the residents of the capital city, who have been on edge due to the recent spike in such crimes.
Kiran Kumar Superintendent of Police (SP), West Tripura district, addressing the media, stated that the police had formed a dedicated investigation team under the leadership of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) from the NCC police outpost.
The team’s efforts paid off as they successfully identified and arrested the two suspects using footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Samir Mia of Bhati Abhaynagar and Bapan Nandi of Madhya Bhubanban.
Both have a history of theft and are well-known to the police. Their criminal activities had escalated in recent weeks, leading to widespread fear and anxiety among the women of Agartala.
In a press conference held at the NCC police station, SP Kiran Kumar, along with other senior police officials, presented the arrested individuals to the media.
The police also displayed the recovered items, which included 13 gold chains, a motorbike, earrings, wristwatches, and other valuables. The total value of the seized items is estimated to be around ₹15 lakh.
The SP highlighted the importance of community cooperation and the role of technology in solving such cases.
The swift action of the police, aided by vigilant citizens and the use of CCTV footage, has led to the capture of these criminals.
Police also urge the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities immediately.
The arrests are expected to bring a sense of security back to the streets of Agartala, as the police continue to crack down on criminal activities in the region.
Further investigations are underway to determine if the accused are involved in other similar crimes across the state and to whom they sold the stolen items.
