Agartala, Nov 4: Tripura Police have arrested two persons and seized three pistols, 50 rounds of ammunition and six magazines during an operation in Agartala following a tip-off about illegal arms possession, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.
The seizure comes ahead of the November 27 urban local body elections in Tripura, including the Agartala Municipal Corporation polls.
The operation was conducted by a police team deployed near a Shiva temple close to the busy Battala bridge in Agartala after receiving secret information, Siddharingsappa K. Pujar, an IPS officer currently attached to the office of the Superintendent of Police West Tripura district, told reporters.
“Based on the information, we formed a team and deployed personnel in the area. Two persons were arrested during the operation. Three pistols, 50 rounds of ammunition, six magazines and two mobile phones were seized from their possession,” he said.
The officer said the arrested persons were from outside the state, but declined to disclose further details, stating that the investigation was underway.
The pistols appeared to be factory-made and bore the inscription “Made in Italy”. However, their exact nature and origin would be established through further investigation and forensic examination, Pujar said.
Police have registered a case in connection with the seizure.
Last month a person was arrested from bordering Bhagalpur under Airport police station with a similar pistol, ammunition and magazines.
