**Agartala, October 1:** Resident doctors of the Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital here staged a sit-in outside the Principal’s office on Wednesday, pressing the administration to take immediate measures to ensure their safety and protect the dignity of medical professionals.
The protest was organised by the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) following an incident involving a senior resident doctor at the Medicine OPD.
The association said the incident and the subsequent circulation of videos and allegations had highlighted concerns regarding the security, privacy and professional protection of doctors working at the hospital.
The protesting doctors gathered outside the Principal’s office in the morning carrying placards and raised several demands before the college authorities.
The RDA submitted a five-point memorandum seeking immediate corrective measures.
It demanded that videos related to the incident circulating on social media be removed and that corrections be issued against what it described as misinformation. The association also sought a public apology and strict measures to prevent unauthorised recording and circulation of similar material.
The doctors further objected to what they termed a unilateral “media trial” of the concerned doctor. The association said the doctor’s version of events should be heard before any public judgment or administrative decision is made.
Another major demand relates to photography and videography inside the hospital. The RDA has sought restrictions on unauthorised filming by media personnel, patients or attendants in wards, OPDs and other patient service areas, citing concerns over privacy and security.
The association has also demanded legal action against people whom it alleged had made false accusations against the doctor. It called upon the Medical Superintendent to lodge an FIR and initiate appropriate proceedings in accordance with law.
Seeking improved security arrangements, the resident doctors demanded replacement of SIS security guards with Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel and deployment of stronger security measures for doctors and healthcare staff.
The RDA said its concerns extended beyond the particular incident and reflected the need for a safer working environment for medical professionals across the state.
It said adequate workplace security was essential for doctors to discharge their duties effectively and for ensuring uninterrupted patient care.
An agitating doctor told reporters that the protest would continue until the authorities took concrete measures on their demands.
The association urged the hospital administration to address the issues at the earliest and ensure a secure and respectful workplace for doctors and other healthcare workers.
