Agartala, April 29:Tripura is reeling under the impact of incessant rainfall triggered by cyclonic conditions over south-westerlies, with five of the state’s eight districts placed under red alert and widespread damage reported across multiple regions. Preliminary estimates indicate that nearly 2,000 houses have been damaged, while one person has lost their life.
Amid the deteriorating situation, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Wednesday chaired a high-level virtual meeting from the Chief Minister’s war room, reviewing the ground situation with district administrations and senior officials.
The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and Secretaries and Heads of key departments as virtually all DMs were present.
Speaking to reporters after the crucial meeting, Dr. Saha said the state has been witnessing continuous rainfall over the past two to three days, prompting an urgent review of damages and response measures.
He said detailed discussions were held with departments such as Drinking Water and Sanitation, Public Works Department, and Education to assess the extent of losses and identify immediate priorities.
“We have gathered comprehensive reports from all districts. Compensation has already been provided in several cases, while in others, disbursement is underway following proper verification,” he said.
Confirming the lone casualty, the Chief Minister stated that a person died due to a lightning strike in Longtarai Valley. An advance compensation has been released to the bereaved family, and the remaining amount will be paid in due course.
Despite large-scale disruptions, restoration efforts are progressing. Around 80 percent of electricity supply has been restored in West District, with work continuing in other affected areas.
The heavy rainfall has also caused significant damage to infrastructure, including drinking water pumps, affecting supply in several locations.
Anganwadi centres, hospitals, and residential houses have suffered varying degrees of damage, ranging from partial to complete destruction.
The state administration has intensified relief and restoration efforts, with officials directed to expedite assistance to affected families and restore essential services.
Authorities remain on alert as further rainfall is anticipated, keeping emergency mechanisms in readiness across vulnerable districts.
