Agartala, January 1: A delegation of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), led by its Chief Executive Member (CEM) Purna Chandra Jamatia, along with Minister of State (MoS) Brishketu Debbarma, on Thursday visited the ancestral home of deceased Anjel Chakma at Machmara in Unakoti district to express solidarity with the bereaved family.
The delegation conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family and handed over an ex gratia assistance of ₹3 lakh on behalf of the TTAADC.
Several Executive Members of the Council, including Dolly Reang and Rajesh Tripura, were present during the handover of the cheque, along with senior leaders of the Tipra Motha party.
Speaking to reporters after the visit, MoS Brishketu Debbarma alleged that Anjel Chakma was attacked because of his physical appearance, describing the incident as a case of racial profiling.
He said the ongoing protests are aimed at seeking justice for the victim and strongly condemning such acts of violence.
Debbarma stated that the visit was intended to convey that the Council and the Tipra Motha leadership stand firmly with the family of Anjel Chakma in their hour of grief.
He further asserted that under the leadership of Tipra Motha supremo and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, the agitation would be intensified in the coming days to ensure justice.
Debbarma also emphasized the need to send a clear message that people from the Northeast are Indians and not Chinese due to often are subjected to racial discrimination or targeted as foreigners.
Handing over the cheque to the victim’s mother, CEM Purna Chandra Jamatia said that the financial assistance was only a symbolic gesture, as no amount of money can compensate for the loss suffered by the family.
He added that, following the direction of Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, the leadership chose to personally meet the bereaved family to express support and share their sorrow.
