Agartala: Feb 02: On Saturday night, the house of Narayan Debnath, a retired army jawan and a supporter of the Left, was set on fire in an act of sabotage. The incident took place in the Gorkhabasti area of Agartala, and there are allegations against the ruling authorities. On Sunday, opposition leader Jitendra Chowdhury, along with Sudip Sarkar, the MLA from the Barajala constituency, and a CPI(M) delegation, visited the affected house to investigate the situation. The team spoke with Narayan Debnath to gather details about the incident.
Jitendra Chowdhury condemned the attack, emphasizing that Narayan Debnath is a former army man and an ardent CPI(M) supporter. He highlighted that ever since the 2023 state assembly elections, BJP goons have continuously targeted Debnath’s house, forcing him into displacement. The attackers, according to reports, are local BJP members, including an influential leader currently holding a high constitutional position. The perpetrators allegedly question Debnath’s support for CPI(M) and have created a volatile and dangerous situation in the area.
Narayan Debnath has written to the Prime Minister and the highest-ranking officials of the Army to inform them about the repeated attacks. He has also approached the Director General of Police (DGP) of the state, requesting a thorough investigation into the matter. Despite these efforts, the state government and its security agencies have failed to ensure his safety. Debnath has been displaced since 2023 due to repeated assaults on his home, which have resulted in the destruction of all his belongings.
On Saturday night, the attackers set his house on fire again, a clear indication of the deteriorating law and order situation in Tripura. Opposition leaders have criticized the government’s inaction, pointing out that lawbreakers are not being held accountable, undermining the state’s rule of law.
