Agartala, January 6: In a major crackdown on human trafficking, five suspected traffickers involved in facilitating illegal border crossings from Bangladesh were arrested in Tripura’s Sepahijala district during a late-night operation conducted on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.
The operation was carried out by the Agartala Government Railway Police (GRP) in coordination with Madhupur Police Station, Border Security Force (BSF), and intelligence agencies.
Raids were conducted in the areas of Puratal Rajnagar, Kaiyadefa, Harihardola, and Konaban, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Jayanta Das (30), Samir Das (38), Jakir Hossain (35), Mobin Mia (34), and Gour Chand Debnath (32), all residents of Sepahijala district.
Authorities revealed that all five were wanted in multiple cases related to human trafficking and illegal border crossings.
Security forces are interrogating the suspects, and they will be presented before the court today with a plea for police remand to aid further investigation.
Officials suspect that more traffickers operating in the region may be apprehended as the investigation continues.
According to official data, in the last four months of the previous year, 30 Indian agents were arrested for facilitating the infiltration of 98 Bangladeshi nationals and 10 Rohingyas into Tripura.
Additionally, last year, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted simultaneous raids across various parts of India, including Tripura, leading to the arrest of over 40 Indian touts linked to human trafficking networks.
Authorities are intensifying their efforts to dismantle such networks along the Indo-Bangladesh border to curb illegal infiltration and human trafficking.
