Agartala, July 28: Jual Oram, Union Minister for Tribal Affairs, arrived in Agartala on Sunday for a two-day visit to Tripura.
At a press conference held at the state guest house, he defended the central Budget 2024, asserting that it is an inclusive budget designed for the comprehensive development of the nation.
The Minister highlighted that the budget categorizes the entire population into four sections: the poor, youth, farmers, and women, with a focus on uplifting these groups.
Oram refuted the opposition’s allegations that the budget would only benefit two states.
He emphasized that the budget is designed to cater to the needs of these sections, aiming for a holistic development approach.
Addressing the necessity of the 125th amendment of the Constitution, which has been demanded by a large number of District Councils for granting more power, including financial autonomy, and for the development of indigenous people, the Minister acknowledged the demands.
He stated that while these demands are significant, the government needs to carefully examine what is appropriate and feasible.
The Minister noted that granting more power to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) does not solely depend on the Tribal Welfare Ministry. Although the Tribal Welfare Ministry might initiate the process, the clearance of the Home Ministry and other relevant ministries is also required due to the complexity of the issue.
He assured that the matter is on his radar and he will look into it.
Regarding the continuous demand for extra financial assistance for the ADCs, the Minister explained that it is an ongoing process that must be addressed across all district councils, not just for one state.
He committed to discussing the matter with various stakeholders.
The Union Minister mentioned that he recently took over the role of Tribal Welfare Minister and had visited Assam before coming to Tripura. He plans to engage in further discussions with other stakeholders before taking concrete actions.
