Agartala, June 21: Residents of Khejur Bagan in Agartala, Tripura, have threatened to boycott the upcoming assembly elections if their long-standing demand for road repair is not met.
The residents allege that the road leading to Chowdhury Complex in Khejur Bagan has not been repaired for the past 25 years. They have repeatedly approached the local councilor and the previous MLA, Dr. Dilip Das, but to no avail.
The condition of the road has worsened during the current monsoon season, making it almost impossible for vehicles to pass through. Even an ambulance or fire engine cannot reach the area.
Frustrated with the lack of response from the authorities, the residents have decided to take matters into their own hands. They have warned that they will block the road and boycott the polls if the road is not repaired within the next few days.
The residents point out that their road is just 100-150 meters from a VIP road. They question whether this is the kind of development that the government is promoting in a Smart City.
They have also appealed to the Chief Minister and the Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation to intervene in the matter.
The residents’ threat to boycott the polls is a serious setback for the ruling party, which is already facing anti-incumbency sentiment. It remains to be seen whether the authorities will take heed of the residents’ demands and repair the road before the elections.
