Agartala, March 03: Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the founder of the TIPRA Motha party, expressed optimism after the central government, along with the Tripura state government and the opposition TIPRA Motha party, signed a significant agreement aimed at addressing various issues concerning the tribal population of Tripura.
He declared that while 60 percent of the battle has been won with the signing of the accord, the remaining 40 percent requires continued unity and perseverance.
Consequently, he officially ended his fast-unto-death protest initiated on February 28 at Hatai Kotor or Baramura Hills range in West Tripura district.
Pradyot’s hunger strike, which commenced on February 28, was abruptly halted when he received a call from New Delhi inviting him to engage in talks regarding the issues he had raised, such as demands for separate statehood and direct funding for the Tripura ADC.
Although he suspended his protest and traveled to New Delhi, he urged his supporters to await further updates from the capital.
Three days later, the tripartite Tiprasa Accord was finalized, establishing the formation of a Joint Working Group tasked with reaching a time-bound, mutually agreed-upon solution.
Addressing a gathering of over 30,000 supporters at the protest stage at Sadhupara in Baramura Hills, Pradyot emphasized the significance of the accord, stating that it signifies the acknowledgment of past mistakes by the Government of India and the commitment to rectify them constitutionally.
He underscored that this victory transcends party lines and is a triumph for the entire tribal community, particularly the youth and future generations.
Reflecting on his past endeavors, including his opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act in 2019 and the formation of the TIPRA Motha party in 2021, Pradyot stressed the importance of non-violent advocacy and unity among the tribal community.
He highlighted the need for sustained efforts and discipline to ensure that the promises outlined in the accord are fulfilled.
Looking ahead, Pradyot expressed his desire for the Joint Working Group to comprise academicians, teachers, lawyers, and individuals well-versed in the history of the state.
He also advocated for improved education and healthcare infrastructure in the ADC areas, emphasizing the need for legislative measures to address these issues effectively.
While Pradyot refrained from commenting on speculation regarding his party’s potential alliance with the ruling BJP government in Tripura, he reaffirmed his commitment to the principles of inclusivity and development.
He acknowledged the support received from various communities during his protest and urged his supporters to maintain peace and refrain from divisive actions.
As discussions regarding political alliances loom, Pradyot emphasized his focus on following through with the assurances provided by the central government, prioritizing the welfare of the tribal population above political considerations.
He expressed gratitude for the support received from political leaders across party lines and emphasized the need for constructive dialogue and collaboration moving forward.
