Agartala, December 11:In a unified stance against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the North East Students’ Organization (NESO) observed Monday as a Black Day, extending their protest beyond the borders of Agartala to resonate across the entire northeastern region.
In Agartala the protest unfolded in front of the Gandhi statue at Circuit House area, where demonstrators prominently displayed black flags and voiced vehement slogans opposing the CAA.
NESO stated that the Black Day was observed simultaneously in all seven states of the Northeast as a robust expression of dissent against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Highlighting the historical context, NESO emphasized that the Citizens Amendment Bill (CAB) was passed by the Indian Parliament on this day, subsequently transforming into the CAA, which allows foreign immigrants to acquire Indian citizenship.
The Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), as part of NESO, vehemently opposes this legislation, aiming to safeguard the happiness and well-being of Indian citizens.
The protesters articulated their demand for the complete withdrawal of the CAA, articulating concerns about foreign immigrants acquiring citizenship and residing in India.
Upendra Debbarma, former vice president NESO and Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) leader, emphasized, “We want no foreigner to obtain citizenship and reside here. Therefore, the eight organizations under the NESO umbrella are collectively protesting against this Act and advocating for its total withdrawal.”
Since the passage of the CAA by the Indian Parliament on December 11 of 2019, NESO has designated this day as a Black Day, symbolizing their steadfast opposition to the controversial legislation.
