Agartala, May 28: Tripura’s state government spokesperson, Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, addressed a press conference at the Secretariat on Monday, providing a comprehensive update on the impact of cyclone Remal and the ongoing relief efforts.
Chowdhury highlighted that a series of high-level meetings had been conducted under the leadership of the Chief Secretary (CS) and Director General of Police (DGP), with all relevant line departments participating.
He added that all District Magistrates (DMs) and Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) were instructed to remain on high alert, with the departments of Revenue, Power, Public Works Department (PWD), and Transport working around the clock.
Chowdhury confirmed that no human loss had been reported from any part of the state. However, the power and agriculture sectors have been significantly affected.
Chowdhury said that the state recorded an average rainfall of 215.5 mm over the last 24 hours, with the highest rainfall of 252.4 mm in Unakoti and the lowest of 168 mm in South Tripura.
A total of 446 houses were destroyed, including 6 completely damaged, 185 severely damaged, and 276 partly damaged, the Minister said adding, fifteen relief camps have been opened across the state, sheltering 746 people from 246 families, with the administration providing all necessary aid.
He said that approximately 397 hectares of cultivable land, belonging to 1,764 farmers, have been affected. An estimated 384 metric tons of standing crops, mostly paddy, have been damaged, with a total estimated loss of around ₹8.30 crores.
The Minister informed that several rivers are flowing above the flood warning level and fishermen have been advised not to venture out due to the risk of thunderstorms.
He claimed that NDRF, SDRF, and fire services are on constant alert and ₹50 crores have been allocated from the state disaster relief fund to compensate for the losses.
Chowdhury added that Chief Minister Manik Saha is closely monitoring the situation and has directed all concerned departments to act promptly to restore normalcy and assist those affected.
Chowdhury emphasized the government’s commitment to managing the crisis efficiently and ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
