Agartala, October 7: Tripura Pradesh Congress demonstrated a demonstrated against the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Saturday in response to the sudden hike in property taxes within its jurisdiction and the recent mass eviction of hawkers and vendors from the city’s streets over the past week.
A large gathering of Congress supporters, including members of its women’s wing, converged for a protest rally in the city.
Commencing at Congress Bhavan, the protesters embarked on a march through the streets of the capital, heading toward the AMC headquarters.
Slogans and demonstrations were carried out by the protesters, expressing their discontent with the AMC’s unilateral decision to raise property taxes without any prior notification.
Prabir Chakraborty, a prominent Congress leader leading the protest, called for the immediate withdrawal of the elevated property taxes.
Chakraborty asserted that the AMC had bypassed established procedures in its decision to increase property taxes and had imposed an unwarranted burden on the public without conducting a proper survey.
Chakraborty also condemned the recent eviction drive undertaken by the AMC just ahead of the festival season.
He pointed out that this operation had resulted in hundreds of people losing their livelihoods as small businesses along the roadside were cleared in the name of removing encroachments and ensuring smooth movement during the Durga Puja celebrations.
He alleged that despite the Supreme Court’s verdict on eviction matters, the AMC authorities had disregarded it.
Furthermore, Chakraborty claimed that they had informed the AMC Mayor in advance about their intention to discuss this critical issue through a deputation, but to their surprise, the Mayor was unavailable, indicating his avoidance of addressing their allegations.
