Agartala, June 24:
In a significant development, the Tipra Women Federation (TWF), the women’s wing of the main opposition party TIPRA Motha, has launched a major movement advocating for the adoption of the Roman script for the Kokborok language.
Taking inspiration from various tribal student and youth organizations such as TISF and TSF, the TWF is pushing for this change.
TWF Secretary, Sharmila Debbarma, speaking to NEL expressed that the “Raj Bhavan Abhiya” aims to bring their longstanding demand to the attention of the Governor without any political bias.
The protest’s primary objective is to draw attention to the long-unaddressed demand for the adoption of the Roman script in the Kokborok language, which is the preferred choice of the majority of Kokborok speakers.
Meantime, TIPRA Motha MLA Swapna Debbarma mentioned that tribal women from across the state are actively participating in the Raj Bhavan Abhiya.
They assemble at the stable ground and march towards the Governor’s House to submit a memorandum to Governor Satyadev Narayan Arya, urging him to fulfill their demand for the Roman script in the Kokborok language.
However, security forces intervened near the circuit house area, resulting in the closure of the VIP road connecting the airport, secretariat, high court, and other important offices.
Later a five members delegation went to meet the governor and submitted their memorandum.
